Jazz in Amsterdam, 1930-1939
In the 1930s, a flourishing jazz scene emerged in Amsterdam with artists from the United States, Suriname and Eastern Europe. Those exciting early years of jazz in the city can now be experienced at Café Restaurant De Bazel.
The monumental building on the Vijzelstraat, built in the same period, provides the perfect setting for this musical journey back in time. The Art Deco architecture, original mosaic floors and warm atmosphere effortlessly transport you to Amsterdam of yesteryear.
Every Sunday afternoon, talented musicians bring the atmosphere of the '30s to life. Enjoy classic jazz tunes while tasting our specially curated cocktails — inspired by recipes from that era.

Jazz Years: people, migration and music
Amsterdam, 1930–1939
From April 3 to September 13, 2026, the Amsterdam City Archive — our direct neighbor in the same monumental building — presents the exhibition 'Jazz Years: people, migration and music in Amsterdam, 1930-1939'. A unique story about how jazz reached Amsterdam's nightclubs and cafés through migrants from the US, Suriname and Eastern Europe.
This special exhibition inspired us to launch the Jazz Era Live & Cocktails music series. It's a unique collaboration: the City Archive tells the historical story, and we bring that atmosphere to life with real live music and cocktails inspired by the 1930s.
A tip: come have lunch at De Bazel and enjoy part of the exhibition from our restaurant. From the dining room you overlook the monumental hall of the City Archive, where part of the exhibition is visible while you enjoy your meal. The perfect combination of culture and culinary delight.
